The PFS may enable joint replacement surgery that
is less destructive to the patent anatomy. Becuase the PFS cuts automatically,
the surgeon doesn't need as good a view of the surgical site, and thus can
use a smaller incision. Further, the PFS cuts a surface from head-on,
as opposed to a bone saw which needs to access the side of the cut. We
hope this will also allow surgeons to use a smaller incision.
Above is a conept model of an endoscopic version
of the PFS. By retracting along the axis of the tool, the cone-shaped
cutter retracts from the opening and stops cutting. We hope that this
will enable "keyhole" incisions for joint replacement surgery.
