The PFS and Minimally Invasive Surgery

The PFS may enable joint replacement surgery that is less destructive to the patent anatomy. Becuase the PFS cuts automatically, the surgeon doesn't need as good a view of the surgical site, and thus can use a smaller incision.  Further, the PFS cuts a surface from head-on, as opposed to a bone saw which needs to access the side of the cut.  We hope this will also allow surgeons to use a smaller incision.

endoscopic PFS sketch

Above is a conept model of an endoscopic version of the PFS.  By retracting along the axis of the tool, the cone-shaped cutter retracts from the opening and stops cutting.  We hope that this will enable "keyhole" incisions for joint replacement surgery.
