Image overlay, a visualization method, combines 3D computer generated images with the user's view of the real world. In contrast with other image overlay systems, this system provides the observer with an unimpeded view of the actual environment, enhanced with 3D stereo images. The system has the ability to track changes in the observer's view point and transform the computer images to appear in the appropriate location.

Medical Applications
Image overlay systems are useful in at least two distinct medical applications: enhancement of surgical environments and telemedicine.

System Description
A significant advantage of the 3D image overlay system is that the user sees virtual images properly registered within the real world scene. For some tasks, the ability to view this data without looking away from the scene is extremely beneficial.
