The Hip Navigation or HipNav system is being developed jointly by Shadyside Hospital and Carnegie Mellon University to help reduce the risk of dislocation after total hip replacement surgery. The system allows a surgeon to determine the optimal, patient-specific location for an acetabular implant (socket portion of a hip implant), and guides the surgeon to acheive the desired placement during surgery. The following links offer descriptions of the system in increasing depth and complexity.

HipNav Overview
This overview is taken from a poster presented at the Orthopaedic Research Society. It has been shortened and simplified making it the "executive summary" of the HipNav system.

HipNav "Virtual Slideshow"
This slideshow was derived from an informational video for surgeons. It is a nice introduction to the system in 22 easy to understand slides (if you don't mind a little medical terminology).

HipNav Technical Paper
This paper is an easy to understand technical discussion of the HipNav system.
