About MRCAS
Medical robotics spans the broad areas of science and engineering to realize intelligent machineries that can be applied to clinical practice. Robotic technologies can improve existing clinical procedures as well as provide innovative new approaches to current clinical problems.
History of the Center
The Center for Medical Robotics and Computer Assisted Surgery (MRCAS - pronounced "Mister Kass") was organized in 1993 as a joint venture between Shadyside Hospital and Carnegie Mellon Univerity.
Mission and Goals
The Center for MRCAS was formed to foster the application of robotic technologies within medicine. MRCAS has three primary goals:
- Raise the awareness and support for robotics and computer assisted techniques within medicine.
- Promote collaboration between physicians and researchers within the Robotics Institute.
- Perform application-oriented research aimed at current clinical needs within the medical system.
Institute for Computer Assisted Orthopaedic Surgery
Institute for Computer Assisted Orthopaedic Surgery at West Penn Hospital
is the sister lab of the Center for MRCAS. It was established in 2001
demonstrating West Penn's committment to clinical excellence in adult
reconstructive surgery. It is part of an expanding clinical program focusing
on applied research and the adaptation of new technology to orthopaedic
challenges.
